UMBC senior tennis standout Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District men's at-large team by the College Sports Information Director of America.
Adewumi was one of 15 honorees from District 2 of the NCAA Division I level. He will now be considered for Academic All-America honors, along with those recipients from the other seven districts.
The highly-decorated Adewumi was recently selected to the America East Tennis All-Academic squad, earning the honor in each of his three years of eligibility. He is the first UMBC male athlete to earn the distinction of capturing the maximum number of America East academic honors.
Adewumi will graduate today with a degree in biochemistry/molecular biology and attend the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He recently won UMBC Athletics' top academic honor, winning the Matt Skalsky Scholar-Athlete Award at the Varsity Awards Banquet on May 7.
Adewumi broke through the 100-win barrier in four year on the tennis courts at UMBC. He just earned America East All-Conference recognition for singles (First Team) and doubles competition (Second Team) in 2012, giving him four career All-Conference citations.
The 2011 and 2012 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar nominee completed his singles career with a mark of 69-44.
He joins women's basketball standout Michelle Kurowski as UMBC All-District award winners in the 2011-12 academic year.
