Boca Raton, Fla.- The UMBC men's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak come to a narrow end, as the host Florida Atlantic Owls nipped UMBC, 4-3 in the Retrievers final spring break contest.
UMBC fell to 10-4 on the campaign, while FAU improved to 9-7.
The Owls won the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. They increased the lead to 2-0 before UMBC struck back to tie the match at 2-2 with wins at Nos. 6 and 2 singles. Senior No. 6 Mwali Phiri(Yonkers, N.Y.) dispatched Derek Madon, 6-2, 6-2 and junior No. 2Rasid Winklaar (Willemstad, Curacao) outlasted Daniel Vardag, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
Winklaar has now won eight consecutive singles matches and the southpaw is 10-2 in his initial spring for the Retrievers. He is 5-0 at the No. 2 position.
The final three matches all went the distance, but it was the hosts that pulled out the first two to clinch the match. UMBC junior No. 3 Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz.) battled back after dropping the first set, but Oliver Webb fought back to take the match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Sophomore No.5 Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) won his first set in a tie-breaker, but Marc Wakim clinched the match for the Owls with a 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Retriever sophomore Adam Duprat (Bobigny, France) won the final match of the day at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 over Omar El Kheshen.
UMBC returns home on Saturday, April 2 when they host America East rival Binghamton.
