BALTIMORE – Following a successful exhibition meet at Bucknell last Saturday, the UMBC swimming and diving program kicks off its 2013-14 dual meet schedule by traveling to New Jersey to take on Rider on Saturday afternoon at Coppola Pool.
The Retrievers and Broncs have met to open the season each of the last four years with UMBC coming away victorious each time. The last time that the Black and Gold started the season against a team other than Rider was in 2008 when UMBC traveled to Raleigh, N.C. to take on N.C. State.
In Pennsylvania last weekend, the Retrievers got the season going with a bang by claiming 25 of the 44 events contested against Bucknell. Senior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) was in fine early-season form, sweeping the three individual medley events. Classmate Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) was also impressive for the men’s squad, claiming all three backstroke events against the Bison.
The Retrievers also got contributions from senior Tim Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), who swept the diving events, and sophomore Leo Endres (Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium) who won the 50-yd. and 100-yd. breaststroke events. Freshmen Andrew McKissick (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph’s) and Gregor Sporlein (Bamberg, Germany/Calvius-Gymnasium), meanwhile, earned wins in the 500 free and 100 free, respectively.
For the women, rookies Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.U./Maria Regina) and Kayla Lilly (Natick, Mass./Medfield) were impressive at their first collegiate competition, each picking up three victories. Escobedo earned wins in the 50, 100, and 200-yd. breast competitions while Lilly won the 100, 200, and 400-yd. IM races.
In addition, the Retrievers were victorious in each of the four relay races, sweeping the opening 200 medley relay and finishing with wins in the 400 freestyle relay.
