Eckhoff Places 23rd in 1-meter, Bean and Darelius Finish Top-30 in 3-meter at NCAA Zone ďAĒ Diving Meet

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. Ė UMBC senior diver Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) placed 23rd in the menís 1-meter diving competition, while sophomore Katie Bean (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and freshman Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) both finished in the top-30 for the womenís 3-meter event, Friday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Day One of the NCAA Zone ďAĒ Diving meet.
Competing at the Zones meet for the second-straight year, Eckhoff posted a score of 257.05, but did not advance to the finals. Teammate Ryan Green (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), finished 32nd with a score of 235.80. Virginia Techís Logan Shinholser, brother of former UMBC diver Amanda Shinholser, won the competition with Harvardís Miachel Mosca placing second to also advance to the NCAA Championships.
Eckhoff is a two-time America East Most Outstanding Male Diver after sweeping the two diving competitions at the conference meet for the second-straight year. In addition, earlier this week he was named to the conference All-Academic Team for the third straight year, while Green was also listed on the squad.
In the womenís 3-meter event, Bean, a silver medalist in the event at both the America East Championships and ECAC Championships, scored 244.60, missing out on the finals by 4.05 points and placing 21st. Darelius finished in 28th at the regional meet with a prelims score of 216.65.
The 2013 NCAA Zone ďAĒ Diving Meet will continue on Saturday at 12L00 p.m. with the prelims of the womenís 1-meter and menís 3-meter competitions. The finals then be held, beginning around 2:30. The Zones meet will wrap up on Sunday with the prelims and finals for the menís and womenís platform diving competition.
