Mohamed Hussein was named UMBC's Athlete of the Month for January 2012
BALTIMORE, MD. – UMBC swimming and diving junior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) was named UMBC’s Athlete of the Month for January 2012 in a poll conducted from Feb. 10-17. Hussein received 62 percent of the votes, to win the poll over women’s basketball’s Kristin Coles (Charles Town, W.Va./Notre Dame Academy/American), men’s basketball’s Chase Plummer (Plainfield, N.J./St. Patrick’s) and track and field’s Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin).
In the month of January, Hussein, a mid-year transfer, won five individual events in just two meets. In his first meet against Howard, the junior picked up wins in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events.
The following week he was even more impressive, winning the 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM against local rivals Loyola and Towson. For his efforts, Hussein was named the America East Male Swimmer of the Week.
Hussein now prepares with the rest of the swimming and diving teams for next week’s America East Championships in Boston. The four-day meet begins on Thurs., Feb. 23 and runs through Sun. Feb. 26 at Boston University.
