Swimming and Diving Hosts Local Rivals Loyola and Towson for Senior/Alumni Day
Ben Wolbert will swim in his final home meet against Loyola and Towson
BALTIMORE Ė The UMBC swimming and diving teams will play host to local rivals Loyola and Towson on Saturday as a part of Senior and Alumni Day celebrations at the UMBC Natatorium. The two teams will be celebrating 14 seniors at their final home meet.
Both the menís and womenís teams are 3-2 this season, and are coming off of convincing wins over Howard last weekend in Washington, D.C.
Against the Bison, both UMBC teams swept every event held during the competition.
Junior Sandy Haibel (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) had a breakout meet for the men, picking up his first dual meet win of the year in the 50-yard freestyle, while also helping the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams to victory.
Junior transfer Reijo Hyvenen (Vantaa, Finland/Makelanrinteen/LSU) impressed in his first meet as a Retriever, claiming victory in both the 100 breast and 100 fly, in addition to being on the victorious 200 free squad.
Junior Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) continued to lead UMBC, picking up his eighth dual meet win of the year, the 200 fly, against Howard.
For the women, junior Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) started 2012 in Washington, D.C., the same way she ended the previous year, by winning 200 fly. Kotonias has won the event in each meet that she has competed this season.
Senior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) looks to continue her strong final campaign as she has already won five dual meet races in 2011-12. In addition, McKenney broke two school records (100 and 200 back) while competing at the Patriot Invitational back in November.
The meet on Saturday will begin at 1 p.m. at the UMBC Natatorium.
