WASHINGTON, D.C. – In their first competitive meet since the Patriot Invitational back in November, the UMBC swimming and diving teams started the 2012 calendar year with a sweep of Howard at Burr Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Mid-year transfer junior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) began his UMBC career picking up three individual wins against the Bison. Fellow transfer Reijo Hyvenen (Vantaa, Finland/Makelanrinteen/LSU) won two individual events and helped the 200 freestyle relay pick up a win as well.
Junior Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) continued his strong 2011-12 campaign, winning his eighth dual meet event of the season, in addition to helping the 200 medley relay to victory.
On women’s side, freshman Mariana Alvarado Gorda (Colonia Viveros, Mexico/Universidad Valle de Mexico) won the 200-yard free (1:57.13) to pick up the first dual meet win of her career.
Sophomore Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) continues to impress, as she claimed victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.82) and also helping the Retrievers win the 200 free and 200 medley relays.
