Swimming and Diving Standout Pierre De Waal Voted UMBC Athlete of the Month for November

BALTIMOREóJunior swimmer Pierre De Waal (Petroia, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) of the menís swimming and diving team was named UMBCís Athlete of the Month for November 2011 in a poll of fans conducted from Dec. 1-7. De Waal received 338 of 523 total votes (64.6 percent) to outdistance himself from Abbey McKenney of womenís swimming and diving (122 votes, 23.3 percent). Erin Brown of womenís basketball, Chase Plummer of menís basketball and Dalton Tolliver of volleyball were also nominated.
De Waal won six individual events and one relay in two November meets. He picked up three individual wins against Maryland on Nov. 12, taking the 500 free, the 1,000 free and the 200 fly. Then at the Patriot Invitational Nov. 17-19, De Waal claimed three gold medals, winning the 200 free, the 500 free and 200 fly, setting new season bests in each event, and he anchored the 800 free relay to victory, as well. In addition, he set a meet record in the 200 fly, swimming a career-best 1:48.15, the second-fastest time in school history, and he was named America East Swimmer of the Week for his performance.
The reigning America East champion in the 500 free and 1,650 free, De Waal has won 11 individual events this season.
