Swimming and Diving Standout Andrew Eckhoff Voted UMBC Athlete of the Month for October

BALTIMORE—Junior diver Andrew Eckhoff of the men’s swimming and diving team was named UMBC’s Athlete of the Month for October 2011 in a poll of fans conducted from Nov. 1-7. Eckhoff received 157 of 334 total votes (47.0 percent) to outdistance himself from Rachel McKee of women’s soccer (101 votes, 31.1 percent). Andrew Bulls of men’s soccer, Abbey McKenney of women’s swimming and diving and Dalton Tolliver of volleyball were also nominated.
Eckhoff shattered UMBC’s 3-meter diving record with a score of 354.30 against Towson on Oct. 29. The previous mark of 318.30 was set by Jeff Salgado in 2007. The Chelmsford, Mass., native swept the diving events against the Tigers, as he also posted a score of 335.10 in the 1-meter competition, and he qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships on both boards.
Eckhoff has won a total of six events in four meets this season, sweeping the boards against Bucknell and taking one each against Rider and Navy.
