De Waal Named America East Male Swimmer of the Week
De Waal was named the America East Male Swimmer of the Week of the third time in his career
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC junior Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) was name America East Male Swimmer of the Week for the second week of the season, the conference announced on Tuesday.
In the Retrievers’ regular season opener at Rider on Saturday, De Waal won the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.20) and the 500 free (4:46.62) before capping the day helping the men’s 400 free relay to victory.
This is the third time De Waal, last year’s America East 1650-yard freestyle champion, has been named the conference Male Swimmer of the Week, with two coming during his sophomore season in 2010-11.
This is the second consecutive week that a Retriever has won a conference award as last week Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/TallinnSecondary Science) was named Male Swimmer of the week and Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) was named Male Diver of the Week.
De Waal and the Retrievers return to action on Oct. 21 when UMBC takes on Navy in a dual meet at the UMBC Natatorium beginning at 4:00 p.m.
