Swimming and Diving Sweeps Rider
Johan Rohtla won the 200-yard backstroke
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Senior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) got her final season off to a great start and the women's 200-yard freestyle relay followed suit, both setting new pool records as a part of UMBC swimming and diving's sweep of Rider Saturday afternoon at the Coppola Pool and Maurer Center. The men defeated the Broncs 160-131 while the women picked up a 161-111 victory.
McKenney, the Most Outstanding Female Swimmer at the 2011 America East Championships, won four events in the first meet of the year for the Retrievers. The senior broke the pool's 50-yard freestyle (24.37) while also claiming victory in the 100-yard free (52.87) and then leading the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.13) and 400- yard free relay (3:33.99) to wins.
Also leading the Retrievers to the pool record in the free relay were senior Ashley Sippel (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton), sophomore Erika Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township), and senior Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach). Sipple was also victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.93)
In addition to winning the 200-yard medley relay, senior Kathryn Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) also picked up a win in the 100- yard backstroke (59.86) and Claire Barron (Lowestoft, England/Benjamin Britten/New Orleans) won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.58).
Sophomore Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista) also picked up a win in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.44), junior Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.79) and 200-yard IM (2:10.68), and junior Amy Fay (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) claimed the 500- yard free (52.87).
On the diving boards, UMBC claimed wins in both one meter events with junior Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelsmford) winning for the men (289.50) and junior Victoria Monetta (Lawrenceville, Ga./Central Gwinnett) earning the win for the ladies (231.00).
Meanwhile on the men's side, sophomore Johan Rohtla (Tallin, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science), last season's America East Most Outstanding Male Rookie, continued his winning ways claiming first in the 200- yard back (1:51.37).
Senior John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) started off his season on the right foot as well, winning both the 100-yard (1:00.37) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.47). Other multiple event winners included Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) in the 200-yard fly and 500-yard free and freshman Lauri Kaei (Harjurmaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) won the 100 (47.90) and 200 free (1:42.62).
In the day's final event, the 400-yard relay (3:12.09) team of Evan Carey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), Kaei, Gallagher, and De Waal picked up the win for UMBC.
The Retrievers return to action to take on Navy in their first home meet on Friday, Oct. 21 starting at 4:00 p.m.
