Swimming and Diving Competes in Day 2 Prelims at Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va.—32 members of the UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams qualified for the championship finals in the prelim session on Day 2 of the George Mason Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
In the 400 IM, three women including freshmen Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) and Jennifer Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md/Academy of Holy Cross) and junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) qualified for the finals, while juniors Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) and Dan Weston-Dawkes (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) qualified fifth and sixth in the men’s final, respectively.
Seniors Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post), Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) and Kate Chialastri (Flourtown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) and junior Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) made the women’s final of the 100 fly, while on the men’s side, senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), sophomore Ben Wolbert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) and freshman Sandy Haibel (Rockville, Md/Richard Montgomery) will compete in the final.

In the 100 breast, the women are seeded 2-3-4 with seniors Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) and Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) and junior Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School), while Mattingly will be the top seed on the men’s side with a time of 57.62.
Kaplanova swam the 8th fastest time in UMBC history in the 100 back in 58.57, while sophomore Kelsey Fitzpatrick (Delran, N.J./Delran) also qualified for the final with a time of 59.14, tied for ninth fastest in school history. Sophomore Nour Saad (
