Swimming and Diving Competes in Day 1 Prelims at Patriot Invitational

    FAIRFAX, Va.—15 members of the UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams qualified for championship finals in the prelim session on Day 1 of the Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va.

     

    Senior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee) qualified second in the 500 free with a time of 4:59.14 and seventh in the 50 free in 24.23. Freshman Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) will join Maccherola in the 50, qualifying sixth in 24.18.

     

    The senior will be joined in the 500 final by senior Jen Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post), junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and freshman Amy Fay (Haverhill, Mass/Haverhill). Senior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) qualified third for the 200 IM final in a time of 2:07.33.

     

    Four Retrievers men qualified for the 50 free final, including seniors Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, NJ./Cherry Hill West) and Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy), sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, NJ./Cherry Hill West) and freshman Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson).

     

    In the 200 IM, juniors Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Dan Weston-Dawkes (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) qualified for the finals in times of 1:54.89 and 1:56.06, respectively. Two sophomores, Mark Garbowski (Cherry Hill, NJ./Cherry Hill West) and Tim Deklau (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) qualified second and third in the 500 free, touching in 4:37.66 and 4:40.83.

     

    Tonight’s finals session begins at 6 p.m. and will also include the 200 free and 400 medley relays.
