Swimming and Diving Announces Captains, Schedule

BALTIMORE—UMBC swimming and diving seniors Kate Chialastri (Flourtown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh), Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) andBrittany Johnson (Ponte Vedra, Fla./The Bolles School) and juniors Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre) and Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) have been named captains for the 2009-2010 season, head coach Chad Cradock announced today. “We are very excited to have these five individuals as our captains,” Cradock said. “They are voted on by their teammates, so they are a true representation of the program and we look forward to them continuing the winning tradition we have established here at UMBC.” Chialastri, Kaplanova and Johnson will lead the women’s team, while Freeman and Jones will lead the men’s side as the Retrievers open competition on Oct. 4 at Bucknell. UMBC’s first home meet will be against Navy on Oct. 25 with the women starting at noon and the men at 2 p.m. The Retrievers’ final two home meets of the season will be against Drexel on Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. and in a tri-meet against Delaware and William and Mary on Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. The men’s team won an unprecedented sixth consecutive America East Championship last year, while the women’s finished second after winning the title the previous two seasons.
