Fairfax, Va.—UMBC swimming and diving had another solid day of competiton at the Patriot Invitational, as the men sit in second place and the women in sixth heading into the final day.
The men started the meet with a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay, as Ahmed Wahby, Luis Galvan, Philip Adejumo, and Ilia Rattsev clocked in at 1:33.09. The quartet of Alexander Gliese, Leo Mercer, Andrew Schrantz and Connor Ganley were right behind them in 1:33.25.
Individually, Nikola Trajkovic earned a spot in the A finals of the 400 IM, as he finished seventh with a time of 4:06.24. Senior Gregor Spoerlein followed that up with a third place finish in the 100 fly, clocking in at 49.81. Adejumo would take eighth in the race, touching the wall in a time of 50.70.
Rattsev and Spoerlein finished two-five in the 200 free, as Rattsev finished in 1:39.93 and Spoerlein in 1:40.65. Kyle Paxton and Ahmed Wahby earned spots in the A finals of the 100 breast and 100 back, finishing second (56.46) and sixth (50.73) respectively. Galvan earned a win in the B finals of the 100 breast, clocking in at 57.33.
The Retriever men ended day two with a silver medal in the 800 free relay, as Rattsev, Trajkovic, Wahby and Spoerlein finished in 6:41.78.
The women saw Emily Escobedo finish second in the 100 fly, finishing in 54.83 after going 55.24 in the prelims. Hania Moro earned a spot in the A finals in the 200 free, placing sixth with a time of 1:54.37.
Escobedo followed up with another silver medal, this time in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:02.20. Kayla Lilly finished the race in eighth with a time of 1:04.99. Haylee Committe earned a first place finish in the C final of the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:06.72.
Lauren Day, Cassandra Willie, and Aleasha Knight went 1-2-3 in the C final of the 100 back with times of 58.63, 58.64 and 59.18 respectively.
The final day of the Patriot Invitational commences at 10 a.m. with prelims and 6 p.m. with finals tomorrow morning.
