Perkins and Rohtla Sweep CCSA Weekly Honors

CCSA Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UMBC seniors Tim Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) and Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) have swept the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Weekly honors, the conference office announced on Wednesday morning.  Perkins takes his third Diver of the Week award of the season while Rohtla earns his second Swimmer of the Week accolade in 2013-14.

Perkins receives his third career Diver of the Week award after winning the 1-meter diving competition this past weekend in Greenville, N.C., as UMBC competed against East Carolina and Catawba.  The senior scored 255.75 to capture the event for the third time this season and bring his win total up to five for the campaign.  Perkins also scored 257.25 during his third-place finish in the 3-meter event.

Perkins is one of three UMBC divers to have already booked a spot at the NCAA Zones meet to be held in March.  Back in October, Perkins scored a career-high 323.62 on the 3-meter board to meet the qualifying standard.  Since then, junior Ryan Green (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and sophomore Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) have also quailed for the regional meet.

Against ECU and Catawba, Rohtla captured both the 100-yd. and 200-yd. backstroke events to bring his season dual meet victory total up to nine.  The senior recorded a top season time in the 200-yd. race, clocking in at 1:50.38, while touching the wall at 52.07 in the 100-yd. event.

Overall, the UMBC swimming and diving teams have accumulated 16 total conference awards with the men taking 11 CCSA honors in their first year in the conference.  Senior swimmer Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) is level with Perkins with three awards while Darelius paces the women with three America East weekly citations.

UMBC finished its dual meet season with the competition in North Carolina last Saturday and now prepares for its championships season.  The women will compete at the four-day America East meet from Feb. 13-16 while the men will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. for the CCSA meet from Feb. 19-22.
