Men’s Swimming and Diving Set to Compete at CCSA Championships in 2014

CCSA Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UMBC men's swimming and diving program, winners of 15 total conference championships, will compete at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships starting in February 2014, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.

In addition to UMBC joining the CCSA, the University of the Incarnate Word and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will also be joining the league for the 2013-14 season.

"We're very excited to be joining the CCSA as it is a conference championship that is supported by several competitive conferences including the America East," said head swimming and diving coach Chad Cradock.  "Our program would like to thank UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski, Vice President for Student Affairs Nancy Young, and Director of Athletics Tim Hall for their support in us making the change.

"The CCSA Championships will allow our men to continue to compete in a championship environment against quality swimmers in some of the best pools in the nation."

Last season, the Retrievers completed their second-ever undefeated dual meet season and then returned to the top of the America East by claiming their ninth conference title in ten years.  As a team UMBC broke ten pool records, five school records, four meet records, and three conference records while scoring a championship meet record 1,075 points.

"We appreciate the opportunity that the CSSA is extending to our men's program," UMBC Director of Athletics Tim Hall said.  "This move allows our swimmers the chance to compete and contend for a championship at the highest level."

The CCSA is a Division I men's and women's swimming conference comprised of 15 members from seven states and Washington, D.C.  Davidson College won the 2013 men's title, edging the College of Charleston and Gardner-Webb, while Florida Gulf Coast earned the women's championship.

"I want to thank the administration of the CCSA for including UMBC in an already successful championship and to the America East for supporting us throughout the process," Cradock added.

The 2014 CCSA Championships will be held Feb. 20-22 at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
