McKenney and De Waal Sweep Weekly Swimming Awards

CAMRBIDGE, MASS. – UMBC senior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del/Brandywine) and junior Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) took home top honors as America East Female and Male Swimmers of the Week, respectively, the conference announced on Tuesday. This is the second weekly honor of the season for both swimmers.

McKenney's honor comes after a record breaking weekend at the Patriot Invitational.  At the three-day meet, McKenney won three individual events while breaking school and meet records in the 100 back (56.17) and 200 back (2:00.39).  The senior captain also took home gold in the 100 free (50.28).  In addition, McKenney led off for the 800 free relay which set a new meet record, while also leading the 400 free relay to victory.

Although not victorious, McKenney helped lead the 200 free relay (1:33.67) to a new UMBC school record, finishing second to UNC-Wilmington.

Almost equally successful over the weekend at George Mason, De Waal picked up three individual wins while also anchoring the 800 free relay to victory.  The junior got the weekend off to a hot start, claiming gold in the 500 free (4:31.63) and 200 free (1:39.87).  De Waal saved his best for last however, setting a meet record while winning the 200 fly (1:48.15).

With the honors, McKenney and De Waal join junior diver Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) to win multiple weekly awards this season.  Sophomore Johan Rohtla (Tallin, Estonia/Tallin Secondary Science) and freshman Lauri Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) have each won the conference Swimmer of the Week award once to give the Retrievers nine total awards so far this season.

Both the men's and women's teams have the remainder of the 2011 calendar off from competition before traveling to Washington, D.C. to take on Howard on Jan. 14.
