CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—UMBC sophomore Johan Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) was named America East Male Swimmer of the Week, while junior Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) was named Male Diver of the Week for the first week of the season, the conference announced Tuesday.
Rohtla swept the backstroke events in UMBC's season-opening meet against Bucknell on Oct. 1. He won the 100 back in 52.43 and the 200 back in 1:52.44. In addition, he was part of UMBC's winning 400 free relay (3:10.01). It is the second America East weekly award of his career. Rohtla was the Most Outstanding Male Rookie at the 2011 America East Championships after winning the 200 back in school-record time.
Eckhoff swept the diving events against the Bison with scores of 315.75 on the 3-meter board and 284.25 on the 1-meter board. Eckhoff finished second in both diving events at the 2011 America East Championships. It is the fourth America East Weekly award of his career.
The Retrievers return to the pool on Saturday, when they visit Rider at 1 p.m.
