The UMBC men’s soccer team (4-0-2) extended its unbeaten streak to six games, but visiting Delaware (2-3-2) scored in the final 20 minutes and the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in warm conditions on the turf at UMBC Stadium.

The Retrievers outshot the Blue Hens, 15-4, and appeared to be in control when junior forward Derek McElligott scored his fifth goal of the season with 2:37 to play in the first half. Junior midfielder Danny Mongello drove the ball in from the right corner and his short cross to the near post found McElligott, who knocked it over charging goalkeeper Kyle Haynes and under the crossbar.

But Delaware tied it on a picture-perfect goal with 18:09 to play in the second half. Adam Flanigan’s long cross from the left sideline was headed just inside the left post by Justin Arpan, who beat netminder Andy Marchica to the ball at the right post.

UMBC put three shots on goal in the second overtime, but Haynes, who finished with six saves, made three solid saves to preserve the tie. Marchica finished with just one save for UMBC.

McElligott now has 29 career goals, and is tied with J.J. Kremer (’95) for seventh place on UMBC’s all-time list. The tie was UMBC’s second straight vs. Delaware, and the Retrievers are unbeaten (4-0-2) vs. the Blue Hens over the last six seasons.
