9/16/2003

  • South Atlantic Rankings

The UMBC men’s soccer team is ranked 4th in the South Atlantic Region, in rankings released on Monday, September 15. The Retrievers are off to a 4-0-1 start, their best start to a season since a 6-0-1 start en route to a 19-1-1 record in the 1999 season. UMBC is 3-0 in one-goal decisions, including last week’s 3-2 overtime victory at George Washington.

Junior forward Derek McElligott is tied for the lead in the America East Conference with 4 goals and 9 points through five games. He is tied for third place in the South Atlantic region in both categories as well. Sophomore netminder Andy Marchica is second in the AEC and fourth in the region with a 0.57 goals against average.

The Retrievers emerge from a nine-day break and play host to Delaware on Saturday at 1pm. Two significant tests loom after that as UMBC plays at #6 Old Dominion on September 24 and at pre-season AEC favorite Northeastern on September 28.
