McELLIGOTT'S LATE GOAL LEADS UMBC TO 1-0 WIN OVER HOST TOWSON IN BATTLE OF BALTIMORE SOCCER TOURNEY
Towson, MD--Junior forward Derek McElligott scored with 9:10 to play as UMBC (2-0-1) edged host Towson (0-1-1), 1-0, in the nightcap of the Battle of Baltimore Soccer Tournament.
The Retrievers, who were 0-2 in the tournament at UMBC last year, will face two-time defending champion Loyola, a 2-1 overtime winner over Navy in the first contest. The Retrievers are 0-16-2 in 18 meetings with the Greyhounds, including a 3-2 overtime setback in last year's opening round. Sunday's title game gets underway at 4:30 p.m. at Towson.
UMBC controlled play throughout, outshooting TU, 12-4, but could not get anything past netminder Zak Thompson. But Retriever senior defender Justin Nall started a counterattack with a head ball which freshman forward David Feazell gathered around midfield. Feazell sent a lead pass to McElligott, who beat his defender and hit the lower left corner of the net past a diving Thompson.
The UMBC defense only allowed two quality scoring chances, with TU's best effort in the 86th minute going wide. Sophomore netminder Andy Marchica recorded his third straight shutout of the season and his fourth in four career starts. UMBC is unscored upon in 290 minutes of action this season and 435 minutes dating back to 2002.
