MEN'S SOCCER OPENS WITH 4-0 TRIUMPH OVER COLGATE

8/29/2003

Baltimore, MD—UMBC (1-0) scored a pair of goals in a 30-span in the second half and went on to defeat Colgate (0-1), 4-0, in the nightcap of the adidas KicK-Off Classic, held at UMBC Soccer Stadium. In the opener, Lafayette (1-0) got an early second half score by Marko Lukin to break a 1-1 tie and they held off Robert Morris (0-1), 2-1.

Despite the classic format, the winners and losers will meet in games three and four of the tournament. Colgate takes on Robert Morris on Saturday at 3pm, while UMBC and Lafayette battle for the title on Sunday at 1pm.

UMBC junior forward Derek McElligott (Greater Grace Christian Acad./Baltimore, MD) scored his 25th career goal just 2:24 into the contest as he chipped a long cross over charging CU netminder Will Martin and into the goal from 22 yards away. The game was delayed for just over an hour by lightning with 10:26 to play in the first half. The Retrievers struck quickly midway through the second half, as freshman Kevin Mezzadra (Loyola-Blakefield HS/Fallston, MD) scored from five yards away after a scramble in front of the Colgate cage. Then, 30 seconds later, junior midfielder Danny Mongello (Wilde Lake HS/Columbia, MD) ran down a long pass from junior defender Mike Pennachia (Calvert Hall/Baltimore, MD), outran the defense, and crossed a pass for McElligott, who easily knocked it home for his second goal of the game and 26th of his career. McElligott is now in eighth place on UMBC all-time goals list. Freshman David Feazell (Fallston HS/Bel Air, MD) capped the scoring after a steal and quick shot over Martin from 17 yards out.

Sophomore netminder Andy Marchica recorded 6 saves to earn his second career shutout in two outings. Martin also made 6 saves for the Red Raiders, who were outshot, 11-4, in the second half.

In the opener, Lafayette forward Jamie Mullarkey (32:48) and Robert Morris striker Said Ali (40:39) exchanged scores late in the first half. But Lukin made a brilliant effort to get the game-winner as he shot the ball just under the cross bar from a tight left angle a the 54:48 mark. Leopard netmdiner Jay Freedman made 3 saves to get the win for his side, while Colonial keeper Mike Ozdinec had three as well.
