WELLS' EARLY OT GOAL LEADS MSOCCER PAST QUINNIPIAC

Senior defender Andy Wells celebrated his22nd birthday in style, getting the game-winning goal just 1:40into overtime as UMBC (6-2-1, 3-1) nipped Quinnpiac (4-3, 1-1), 2-1, in a Northeast Conference contest.The Retrievers controlled play throughout the game, but Braves' Everson Maciel tied the score at 1-1 with 7:49 remaining in regulation.After UMBC's James Hamilton was called for a handball, Maciel hita perfect direct kick from 24 yards away into the upper right corner of the net. But UMBC came out strong in overtime and converted on a free kickof their own. Hamilton's precise serve found a streaking Wells, who headed it home past Quinnipiac netminder James Ryan. Retriever junior midfielder Alex Wilmot had given UMBC a 1-0 leadAt the 23:38 mark. Quinnipiac failed to clear a UMBC corner kick, andWilmot's shot from 17 yards away found its way through several players and beyond the reach of Ryan. UMBC outshot Quinnipiac, 21-8 and had 12 corners compared to 2 for the visitors. Ryan made six saves for the Braves, while BrianRowland had five for the Retrievers. It was career goal number 14 for Wells, UMBC's three-time First TeamAll NEC sweeper. The Retrievers improved to 16-2 at home vs. NECCompetition in three-plus seasons of soccer.
