Men's Soccer Lifts Lid on America East Play by Welcoming Vermont on Saturday Evening
The UMBC men’s soccer team opens America East Conference play by welcoming the Vermont Catamounts to Retriever Soccer Park on Sat., Sept. 29. UMBC (4-2-3) is unbeaten in its last three games, while Vermont (3-3-3) owns a five-game unbeaten streak. There is free family admission for all UMBC faculty/staff members to this match. Kick-off time at Retriever Soccer Park is set for 7:00 p.m. The contest is also available via live video streaming at www.umbcretrievers.tv.
LAST TIME OUT: UMBC dominated much of the action, outshooting La Salle, 17-5, but the Retrievers and Explorers battled to a 0-0 double overtime draw in a non-conference contest at Retriever Soccer Park. With the draw, UMBC extended its unbeaten streak to three straight.
CELEBRATE, GOOD TIMES, COME ON!: UMBC celebrates its tenth season in America East in 2012. The Retrievers have earned three consecutive berths in the league championships for the first time in their league tenure. UMBC is 32-29-10 in nine previous America East season, which includes a mark of
21-8-6 (.686) in games at home in league play.
UMBC is 3-3-3 in conference-opening games and 5-1-3 in conference home openers.
UMBC’s win over Robert Morris on Sept. 1 was the 400th in school history (45 previous seasons). UMBC is now 403-301-88 (.566).
NOTES: UMBC was ranked 25th in the nation in home attendance in 2011 with 911 fans per game and are averaging 1,053 through the first five games of the 2012 campaign… The lightning delay held the Sept. 1 attendance down to 525… UMBC is 27-3-13 (.779) in September home games since the 2003 season.
INSIDE THE SERIES: The Catamounts hold a narrow 4-3-2 lead in the series and are 3-1-2 vs. UMBC in the last six meetings. The Retrievers are 2-1-1 at home vs. Vermont.
A depleted UMBC squad lost in Burlington, 4-1, in the final regular season game in 2011. In 2010, former Retriever Levi Houapeu put on quite a display, scoring all three goals in a 3-1 victory at UMBC Stadium.
A GLANCE AT THE CATAMOUNTS: The Catamounts started out the season at 1-3-0, but are unbeaten (2-0-3) in their last five matches. Vermont is led by SR F D.J. Edler, who scored two goals in their last victory against Hofstra. The Catamounts broke the game open with three goals in the final 17 minutes of play. Edler has a team-high four goals on the season.
The Catamounts have been off for a week since playing a game against Quinnipiac which resulted in 2-2 double overtime tie. Edler scored in the 31’ to give the Catamounts a 2-1 lead, but QU tied the score with under 14 minutes left to earn the draw. JR G Conor Leland made seven saves vs. the Bobcats, as Vermont was outshot, 22-10.
UP NEXT: UMBC hosts Howard in a non-conference match on Tues., Oct. 2. Kick-off at Retriever Soccer Park is set for 7:00 p.m.
