UMBC Head Coach Pete Caringi with Spurs' Manager André Villas-Boas
For the second time in four years, UMBC’s Retriever Soccer Park became a training ground for one of the world’s top professional soccer teams. Tottenham Hotspur, which competes in the English Premier League, trained and participated in a youth clinic on the UMBC campus on Thursday, July 26. The Spurs are in Baltimore to compete vs. league rival Liverpool FC in a friendly match at M&T Bank Stadium on Sat., July 28.
In July of 2009, both AC Milan and Chelsea FC trained on campus in preparation for a match in the World Football Challenge, which was also played at M&T Bank Stadium.
Spurs had a morning and afternoon practice in the sweltering heat on Thursday and dined at UMBC’s on-campus dining facility, True Grits, in between sessions. Following the afternoon practice, team representatives put on a free clinic for members of the Soccer Association of Columbia.
