Men's Soccer Faces First Road Test of the Season at Surging Loyola on Wednesday Evening

    Andrew Bulls scored the lone goal in UMBCs' 1-0 win over Loyola in 2009.

    The UMBC Retrievers (2-1-2) play their first “road” game of the 2011 campaign when they face the Loyola Greyhounds (4-1-1) at Ridley Athletic Complex at 7:00 p.m. The two teams convened at the same location last Sept. 22, but the match was halted in the 28th minute with the score tied at 0-0 when game officials spotted lightning.

    AS OF LATE: The Retrievers had their 12-game unbeaten streak halted on Sept. 13, but UMBC did not go down without quite a battle. No. 1-ranked Maryland nipped the host Retrievers, 4-3, in double overtime before 2,513 fans at Retriever Soccer Park. The Greyhounds have won three consecutive one-goal decisions, including a 1-0 victory over visiting Campbell on Sept. 17.  

    The Retrievers are currently ranked eighth in the Northeast Region and are receiving votes (12) in the NSCAA national rankings. Two other America East foes- Vermont (6th) and Albany (ARV) are also ranked in the Sept. 19 poll. Loyola (Md.) is ranked No. 3 in the North Atlantic region.   

    Senior forward Andrew Bulls became the first player in school history to record 25 goals (29) and 25 assists (30) in a career. His 88 career points are fourth on the Retriever all-time list. He became the first player in school history to record 30 career assists and needs 19 more points in 2011 to become UMBC’s all-time leading scorer at the NCAA Division I level.

    Senior goalkeeper Dan Louisignau posted shutouts in the first three games of the campaign and was not scored upon for a total of 495 minutes (dating back to the first half of the NCAA Tournament game at Princeton last season last season) until Navy scored in the 65th minute on Sept. 10. He is currently 11th in the nation in saves per game (6.2) and 19th in save percentage (.861).

     

    An America East Second Team All-Conference goalkeeper in 2010, Louisignau also had nine saves vs. Navy and Maryland and posted nine on Oct. 2, 2010 in a 1-1 draw with Binghamton. He has eight shutouts in 18 career starts for UMBC.

    A GLANCE AT THE GREYHOUNDS:  Loyola has won three straight games and is unbeaten in four in a row. All five of LU’s decisions have been by a single goal. Freshman Connor Thompson scored his first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute and netminder Kyle Whitman made ten saves in the 1-0 victory over Campbell. Whitman is ranked 14th in the nation in save percentage (.872) and in total saves (34). Both UMBC and Loyola (3-3) recorded draws with their one common opponent, Navy.

     

    INSIDE THE SERIES: The Retrievers have won two of the last three meetings, but Loyola leads the all-time series, 18-2-2. The last five meetings have all been decided by one goal. In the last meeting, Bulls scored on a free kick in the 44th minute and netminder Phil Saunders made three outstanding saves in the final two minutes as UMBC (8-0-0) edged Loyola, 1-0, before 1,505 fans at UMBC Stadium on Sept. 22, 2009.
