MEN'S SOCCER SPLITS FIRST NEC WEEKEND

UMBC (4-2-1, 1-1) shutout Monmouth, 4-0, but dropped a 3-1 decision to Sacred Heart in its first NEC weekend of competition. Four different Retrievers hit the nets as UMBC (4-1-1, 1-0 NEC) won its league opener, 4-0, over host Monmouth (2-4, 0-1) in West Long Branch, NJ on Friday afternoon.Senior back Andy Wells got on the board first, converted a James Hamilton cross to the far post at the 23:10 mark. Then, just before halfime, Hamilton found Ricky Brown with a through ball, and the senior midfielder scored at 43:41 to give the Retrievers a 2-0 halftime edge.Freshman forward Derek McElligott (57:40) and junoir midfielder Alex Wilmot (65:09) addedsecond half tallies as UMBC put 22 shots on Monmouth netminder Mike Erskine. UMBC goalies Brian Rowland (2 saves) and Tom Wunk (1 save) combined for the shutout for the Retrievers.But Sunday in Fairfield, CT was not as kind to the Retrievers. They fell behind in the 21st minute, but managed to tie the score at 28:51 on a goal by P.J. Wakefield. But SHU's Franco Cartiera got the game-winner at 31:53, and added an insurance marker at 65:00 minutes. UMBC would outshoot the Pioneers, 20-12, but could not rally in the final 25 minutes.
