Men's Soccer Notebook (Updated!): Season Tickets Available for 2011 Season; 2010 Team Honored as One of Nation's Best

For the first time in school history, UMBC men’s soccer fans can support their Retrievers by purchasing season tickets. Pete Caringi’s crew has its best home schedule in school history, featuring 11 dates, including contests with Navy (Sept. 10), Maryland (Sept. 13), and Penn State (Oct. 19). A season ticket to Retriever soccer-2011 is just $40, with discounts for UMBC alumni ($35) and UMBC faculty/staff ($25). UMBC was one of five DI-AAA institutions to compete in the 2010 NCAA Championships. The other honorees are UC-Santa Barbara, Charleston, Creighton, and Providence. All five schools advanced to the second round of the tournament.
Now in its 11th year, the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association's mission is to enhance initiatives common to its Division I-AAA membership (the 95 Division I institutions that do not sponsor football). The Division I-AAA ADA is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), which is in its 47th year.
Play On: Seven Retrievers on the 2011 roster have competed United States Youth Soccer Association teams which advanced to regionals and nationals.
Two weeks ago, the Baltimore Bays Chelsea U19 boys completed a clean sweep through bracket play and single elimination matches at the USYSA Region One Regional Finals in Lancaster, Pa. The Bays defeated Lower Merion (Pa.), 2-0, to win the title and advance to the National Final Four competition beginning on July 27 at The Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz. The U19 National Championship is called The McGuire Cup and is the oldest Youth Cup in existence in the United States. The Baltimore Bays Chelsea 19s will attempt to become the sixth team from Maryland to win the prestigious U19 McGuire Cup the last coming two years ago by the Baltimore side.
Bays 19s forward Pete Caringi III (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) , a rising sophomore for UMBC, led all scorers in the tournament with six goals (through five games played). Other UMBC Players on the team are rising juniors, goalkeeper Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall), midfielder Dave Vaeth (Dundalk, Md./Patapsco), midfielder Milo Kapor (Woodbridge, Ontario/Emily Carr) and rising red-shirt sophomore back Travis Dennis (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt).
Incoming freshmen Joseph Glos (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) and Zach Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) competed in the United States Soccer Development Academy 2011 U-17/18 Championships in Milwaukee, Wisc. from July 9-16. Also named Baltimore Bays Chelsea, the team went 1-1-1 in group play and competed in the fifth-place game.
Top Dog: Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. has 15 winning seasons in his twenty campaigns at UMBC heading into 2011. His all-time mark at UMBC is 212-131-41 (.607)
Bullish on Bulls: In 2010, senior forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) became the third Retriever to earn multiple America East First Team honors, duplicating his 2009 citation. He also earned NSCAA All Northeast Region Second Team honors. Bulls set an America East Conference all-time record with 15 assists-eight players, including Levi Houapeu, held the previous mark of 13. He finished third in the nation in assists (15) and assists per game (0.75) and tied alum James Hamilton (’01) for the top spot on UMBC’s all-time assist list with 28. His 15 helpers represent the second-best single season in school history. Bulls became the first player in school history to record 25 goals (28) and 25 assists (28) in a career. His 84 career points are fifth on the Retriever all-time list- he stands just three points behind Houapeu and would need 23 points in 2011 to become UMBC’s all-time leading scorer at the NCAA Division I level.
Golden Gloves: Senior netminder Dan Louisignau (Wilmington, Del./Concord) was tabbed Second-Team All-Conference by the America East coaches in 2010. He finished the year second in the conference in goals against average (0.87), save percentage (.845) and saves per game (4.73). Louisignau’s 84.5 save percentage was tenth-best in the nation.
