RETRIEVERS TIE LIU FOR REGULAR SEASON NEC TITLE; SEEDED #2 AND WILL FACE DEFENDING CHAMPION FDU IN TOURNEY FIRST ROUND

11/10/2002

Long Island University earned a win and a tie in their action this weekend and ended the season with an identical 8-1-1 record to the Retrievers. LIU's 2-1 win over UMBC during the regular season will give the Blackbirds the #1 seed in the upcoming NEC Tournament at UMBC this weekend. UMBC will be the #2 seed and will face rival FDU in the second semi-final game on Friday, November 15 at UMBC Soccer Stadium. For UMBC, it is their second regular season title in four years. The Retrievers won the regular season outright in 1999, and as the #1 tournament seed, captured the NEC title, 2-1, over Mt. St. Mary's at UMBC Soccer Stadium. It will be the third straight year that UMBC has faced FDU in the tournament. In 2000, FDU defeated UMBC, 2-0, in the finals in Teaneck, and last season, the Knights eliminated UMBC, 1-0, in the semis en route to their run to the "Elite Eight" in the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. Earlier this season, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in Baltimore. FDU finished as the third seed with a 5-1-4 league record. LIU will meet #4 seed Robert Morris in the opening game of the tournament at 11:00 a.m. The Retrievers will battle the Knights at 1:30 p.m. The title game is set for noon on Sunday.
