Sophomore forward Derek McElligott was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week, after his three-goal, two-assist performance in a pair of UMBC victories this weekend. It is McElligott's second honor this year, as he earned POW recognition on September 16. Last year's NEC Rookie of the Year set up Brandon Quaranta for the game-winning goal in a 3-0 win over St. Francis (PA) on Friday, then scored an insurance marker midway through the second half. In a 4-0 triumph over Monmouth, McElligott scored the game-winner in the 16th minute, assisted on Marco Angelini's late first half score, and tallied his 11th goal of the season with 15 mintues to play. He leads the NEC in scoring with 26 points and is ranked 7th in the South Atlantic region. McElligott has 23 career goals in less than two full seasons and is already ranked 10th on the school's all-time goals list. He has 15 goals in 19 NEC career outings and has five game-winning goals in 2002. The Retrievers clinched a berth in the NEC Tournament (at UMBC, November 15, 17) this past weekend, and stand in first place in the conference at 7-1-1 (10-5-2 overall). UMBC has made the four-team field in all five years in the NEC.
