ROWLAND TIES SCHOOL RECORD FOR SHUTOUTS AS SOCCER BLANKS RED FLASH, 3-0
Brian Rowland tied his own school record with 8 shutouts in a season.
Senior goalkeeper Brian Rowland tied a pair of records as UMBC (9-5-2, 6-1-1 NEC) shutout St. Francis (PA) (5-10-1, 2-4-1), 3-0, in an NEC matchup in raw conditions at UMBC Soccer Stadium. Rowland's shutout of the Red Flash was the 21st of his career, tying Steve Zerhusen ('78) for the all-time school lead. It was the Toronto native's eighth shutout of the season, tying his own record set in 2000. He needed to make just two saves, as UMBC outshot the Red Flash, 15-5.The Retrievers got on the board early, as junior forward Brandon Quaranta scored his fourth goal of the season at the 10:17 mark. Defender Marcus Gross lofted a ball down the field and Derek McElligott headed it forward to a streaking Quaranta, whose low liner from 13 yards out hit the left corner of the net. UMBC would get an insurance goal at 63:33 on a nice passing play. Quaranta fed Danny Mongello down the right side, and the sophomore defender drew out goalie Joe Alainello, and fed McElligott for a tap-in from in front. It was McElligott's team-leading ninth goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Steve Blakely took advantage of Alainello's misplay of a harmless ball in the box and tallied his second goal of the year at 72:48. The Retrievers have are now 6-1 in their last seven outings and maintain their tenuous grip on first place in the NEC.
