UMBC TO HONOR 1977 MEN'S SOCCER TEAM DURING HOMECOMING FESTIVITIES
10/9/2002
The 1977 UMBC men's soccer team will be honored as part of UMBC's Homecoming Festivities, on Saturday, October 26. The day kicks off as several members of that team will compete in the annual Alumni Game at 11am. The team will then have an informal reception, before being introduced at halftime of the UMBC-Monmouth game, which begins at the Soccer Stadium at 1pm. The '77 Retrievers will be celebrating their 25th anniversary of a memorable 1977 season. The team rolled to a 15-1 record, and captured the tough Mason-Dixon Conference, which had been dominated by the Pete Caringi-led University of Baltimore Bees. The Retrievers received the program's first bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament, but fell to Florida International, 2-1, in Miami. All but one member of the team hailed from Maryland, and players such as Dave Andrzjewski (Dundalk), striker Ray Ford (Curley) and goalkeeper Steve Zerhusen (Calvert Hall) earned All America honors in either 1977 or 1978.
