ROWLAND, McGOWAN SWEEP NEC SOCCER HONORS

10/7/2002

UMBC senior goalkeeper Brian Rowland and freshman midfielder Matt McGowan won Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week respectively for the week ending October 6, 2002. Rowland recorded back-to-back shutouts in UMBC 1-0 wins at Quinnipiac and Central Connecticut. He made one dazzling save vs. Quinnipiac and did an outstanding job defending crosses as the Bobcats pressured UMBC throughout the game. He then registered three saves in blanking high-scoring Central. Rowland has allowed just two goals in his last six outings to lower his GAA to 1.04 on the season. He leads the NEC in shutouts with five and has 19 in his career, three shy of UMBC's all-time record. Rowland is tied for third in the region with his 1.04 GAA.McGowan assisted on both game winning goals in UMBC's victories and now has helpers in his last four games. He has five assists in just seven games this season and is tied for sixth in the South Atlantic region in assists. His corner kick in the 72nd minute found Mike Pennacchia for the game-winning goal. He then initiated UMBC's score vs. Central, setting up midfielder Oscar Villalobos down the wing, who fed Derek McElligott for the game-winner vs. the Blue Devils.
