MEN'S SOCCER HOLDS OFF SACRED HEART, 2-1
Baltimore, MD-Sophomore forward Derek McElligott and freshman fullback Marcus Gross scored in a span of 2:24 in the second half and UMBC (4-4-2, 1-0-1 NEC) held on for a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart (0-6-2, 0-2-1 NEC) in a Northeast Conference contest. After a scoreless first half, McElligott recorded his team-leading sixth goal of the season, beating SHU netminder Chris Marchese from the right wing to the far left post at the 61:25 mark of the game. UMBC had caught the Pioneers on a counter-attack and freshman midfielder Matt McGowan slid the ball ahead to McElligott, who gave UMBC the lead. Then, McElligott was taken down in the box by Sacred Heart's Stanley Zazula, and Gross converted the penalty kick inside the right post at 63:49. The Pioneers rallied at 71:25 as freshman forward Nick Loyd rocketed home a shot from 16 yards away to the far right post after a UMBC clearing pass did not clear the box. Sacred Heart got another break when Gross, UMBC's sweeper, was issued a red card after a tackle at midfield. at the 75-minute mark. But UMBC was able to keep Sacred Heart without any quality scoring opportunities down the stretch. UMBC outshot Sacred Heart, 15-12, and Retriever netminder Brian Rowland was credited with six saves. Marchese had five stops for the Pioneers. The win snapped a three-game winless streak for UMBC and s streak of four straight overtime contests.
