UMBC sophomore forward Derek McElligott takes home the Player of the Week award after carrying UMBC to the tournament title at the Adidas Mountaineer Classic, hosted by Mount St. Mary’s, over the weekend. Slowed by a broken leg which sidelined him for the entire summer, McElligott earned his first start of the year versus Temple on Saturday and responded by recording the game-winning goal, as well as a pair of assists. McElligott then registered his second game-winner of the tournament just 34 seconds into overtime as UMBC defeated previously unbeaten St. Peter’s in Sunday’s championship game, 1-0. The 2001 NEC Rookie of the Year, McElligott enters play this week leading the league in scoring (10 points/1.67 ppg). McElligott is currently tied for fifth place in both goals per game and points per game in the South Atlantic region.
