Levi Houapeu Named America East Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week; Bulls-Houapeu 1-2 in the Nation in Scoring (Hartford Notes Attached)

    , Mass.—For the second time this season, UMBC junior forward Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) was named America East Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, for games ending Oct. 24, 2009.

     

    The UMBC men’s soccer team plays (12-3-0, 3-2-0 America East) plays its second of three road “Senior Nights” on Wednesday, Oct. 28, when they travel to Hartford (6-6-2, 3-1-1) for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at Al-Marzook Field.     Houapeu produced his second three-goal game of the season as the host Retrievers (12-3-0, 3-2-0 America East) clinched a spot in the America East playoffs with a 5-1 win over Albany on Saturday at UMBC Soccer Stadium. He became the first Retriever to post multiple hat tricks in a season since Derek McElligott had a pair in 2001 and his seven-point game (3 goals, 1 assist) is the most for a Retriever since McElligott tallied seven points vs. Central Connecticut on Sept. 28, 2001

     

    Also named to the league’s top honor on Sept. 21, Houapeu scored the game-tying goal in the 71st minute at Boston University, and set up Dustin Dzwonkowski for the game winner four minutes later in UMBC’s 2-1 last Wednesday.

     

    Houapeu, who entering the week third in the nation in scoring, has 39 points (14 goals, 11 assists). He posted his first three-goal game vs. Drexel on Sept. 19 and has five goals and three assists (13 points) in five America East games. Houapeu’s 11 assists tie him with John Samarztis (1990) for the fourth-most in a single season at UMBC and are the most since Ty Engram recorded 13 helpers in 1999.

     

    The Retrievers can finish no worse than fifth in the league, which features a six-team playoff format. UMBC could move up as high as second place as they have a pair of road games at Hartford and Binghamton next week.

     

    In the latest NCAA statistics, released on Oct. 26, UMBC sophomore forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonog h) and Levi Houapeu were ranked 1-2 in the nation in points per game. Bulls, who is tied for the lead with 1.0 goals per game (15/15g) averages 2.67 points per game, while Houapeu, who is tied in assists per game (0.73, 11 in 15 games) averages 2.6 points per outing. UMBC is the second-highest scoring team in the country with 2.6 goals per contest, behind unbeaten Akron, which averages 2.8 goals per game.
