Men's Soccer Hosts Mount St. Mary's in adidas Classic Finale

The UMBC men's soccer team (4-0-0) long-time rival Mount St. Mary's (1-2-0) in the fourth and final game of hte 2009 adidas Kick-Off Classic on Saturday, Sept. 12. Kick-off time for the game is set for 2:30 p.m. at UMBC Soccer Stadium. Navy plays St. Francis (Pa.) in the opener on Saturday at noon.

The 4-0-0 start is UMBC’s best since the 1999 season, when UMBC opened 6-0-0 en route to the best record in the nation (19-1-2) and an NCAA berth…  Sophomore forward Andrew Bulls was named National Player of the Week and  by College Soccer News and the NSCAA… Bulls is the first Retriever to score two goals in three consecutive games since Derek McElligott accomplished that feat in 2003 (Sept. 28-Oct. 4) … He has been credited with the game-winning goal in all four of UMBC’s victories... Bulls is only one goal shy (7) of matching his season total of eight in 2008, a figure which led the team... Bulls’ seven goals in four games matches Ty Engram’s seven-in-four to start the 1999 campaign.

Levi Houapeu’s three-assist effort in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Saint Francis is the most in a game for UMBC since Powell Cucchiella recorded four in a 10-0 win over NJIT in the opener of the 2004 campaign... His six helpers on the campaign are the most in a single season since Matt Watson amassed seven in 2005... 

Freshman midfielder Milo Kapor scored his first collegiate goal in the win over the Red Flash... UMBC continues its season-long five-game homestand when they entertain Towson on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).

Series Notes 
UMBC has a five-game winning streak and ten-game unbeaten streak vs. Mount St. Mary’s and the Retrievers lead the all-time series, 19-11-2.... Andrew Bulls and Dustin Dzwonkowski scored for UMBC in last season’s 2-1 Retriever win at UMBC Soccer Stadium... Chris Wheeler scored the Mount’s goal to cut the 2-0 deficit in half, but UMBC held on for the victory.

Mount St. Mary's scored twice in the final 16 minutes, but No. 18 Loyola held on for a 3-2 win in non-conference men's soccer action last Friday...
Ian Hendrie notched his second goal of the year for the Mount  (1-2-0) and Will Thomasposted his first tally of 2009 in the loss... Scott Phinith dished out two assists to help Mount St. Mary's score four times in the second half en route to a 4-0 season-opening victory against VMI in on Sept. 1... Wheeler scored MSM’s lone goal in Thursday’s 3-1 loss to Navy... The Mountaineers were 9-10-1 last season.
