Andrew Bulls Named College Soccer News' National Player of the Week; Also Earns America East Top Honor

9/8/2009

College Soccer News has tabbed UMBC sophomore forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) as its National Player of the Week for games ending Sunday, Sept. 6. Bulls also earned a spot on CSN’s National Team of the Week and he was also named America East Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.

Bulls, who amassed five goals and four assists, in three wins last week, sparked a school record-tying 14 goal explosion as UMBC (3-0-0) bested Virginia Tech, 3-1, Delaware, 5-1, and St. Joseph’s, 6-0. He scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the opener vs. the Hokies and produced his first career two-goal effort, adding a helper, in Friday’s game vs. the Fightin’ Blue Hens. He concluded the week with a career-best six-point effort (two goals, two assists) in the rout of the Hawks.

Both Bulls and junior forward Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) are the first Retrievers to score goals in three straight games since Kevin Gnatiko did so in 2007. They are also the first UMBC players to post three consecutive multiple-point games since Derek McElligott had two goals in three straight games in 2003. Bulls’ six-point effort vs. St. Joseph’s was the first for a Retriever in five seasons as McElligott (three goals) and Powell Cucchiella (one goal, four assists) posted six points in a 10-0 rout of NJIT on Sept. 4, 2004.

UMBC received votes in College Soccer News’ Top 30 poll this week. The Retrievers host the adidas Kick-Off Classic on Thursday and Saturday of this week. UMBC faces St. Francis of Pennsylvania on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and entertain Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
