RETRIEVER-LADEN BALTIMORE BAYS WIN U-23 NATIONAL TITLE

On Sunday, July 21, 2002, the Baltimore Bays, replete with current and former UMBC players, won the U23 National Soccer Title in Philadelphia with a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rush. It is the first time in Maryland's History that a team has captured the amateur title. The U23 team which is the first team to represent the new club fell behind in the championship game against the Colorado Rush until Retriever incoming junior Marco Angelini received a thru ball from recently-graduated Retriever P.J. Wakefield to make it 1-1. About 10 minutes later in the 2nd half, Angelini passed a ball into the box to UMBC junior midfielder Brandon Quaranta for the game winning goal. Retriever alum and former assistant coach Mike Libber coached the team along with alum Lou Karko. This team was sponsored by Soccer Shack in Belair and Lager's Pub.Former and current Retrievers included Angelini Joe Capone, Ryan Cuomo, Lou Karko,Adam Nastalksi, PJ Wakefield, Andy Marchica, James Hamilton, and Andy Wells.The won the regional title with victories over teams from Long Island, Albany, and New Jersey.
