2002 MEN'S SOCCER SCHEDULE RELEASED

UMBC will open its 2002 men's soccer season with three tournaments and will play host to the Northeast Conference Tournament in mid-November.The Retrievers will host the third annual Kappa Kick-Off Classic on Friday, August 30 and Sunday, September 1. UMBC will entertain Colonial Athletic Association rival Hofstra at 4:30 p.m., following the contest between Mt. St. Mary's and Gardner-Webb. UMBC will face Gardner-Webb in the finale on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The following weekend, UMBC will host local rivals Towson, Navy, and Loyola, in a tournament on Friday, September 6 and Sunday, September 8. Towson meets Navy in the opening on Friday, then UMBC takes on Loyola at 4:00 p.m. The consolation (2pm) and title games (4:30 p.m.) take place on Sunday, following a big high school clash between Loyola and Calvert Hall. UMBC will compete in the Mount St. Mary's Tournament vs. Temple and St. Peter's the very next weekend, and then open Northeast Conference play on Friday, September 27, when they host two-time defending league champion Fairleigh Dickinson at 3:30 p.m. The Knights made it all the way to the "Elite Eight" of college soccer last season, after sneaking by UMBC, 1-0, in the NEC semi-finals. UMBC closes the season with a premier non-conference match-up vs. William & Mary on Wednesday, November 6, then hosts the four-team NEC Tournament on November 15 and 17. UMBC last hosted the league tournament in 1999, when they won the regular season and post-season league titles and made their first NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament appearance. Pete Caringi's 12th UMBC squad will have to replace All NEC players such as Andy Wells and P.J. Wakefield, both selections by the Baltimore Blast in the 2002 MISL Amateur Draft. Senior netminder Brian Rowland, and NEC Rookie of the Year Derek McElligott will lead a young UMBC squad into action in 2002.AUGUSTFri. 30 Kappa Kick-Off Classic at UMBC Mt.
