Men's Soccer Faces UNH Wildcats in Durham, N.H. on Wednesday Evening in Battle for Final Playoff Spot

10/28/2008

The UMBC men’s soccer team faces a must-win situation at New Hampshire as two desperate teams battle for one playoff spot in an America East contest in Durham, N.H. on Wednesday night. UMBC (6-7-2, 1-4-1 America East) is one point behind the sixth-place Wildcats (6-5-4, 1-4-2), who will be playing their final league game. The Retrievers finish the season at Stony Brook (3-10-4, 0-3-3 AEC) on Sunday and the top six conference teams will compete in the America East Championships.

The series is tied at 2-2-1, but UMBC has never won at UNH, dropping a 2-1 decision in 2004 and a 3-0 verdict in 2006. Last season, the two teams played on the final day of the season and tied, 1-1, with both squads then moving on to the championships. Ironically, both the Retrievers and Wildcats advanced on the road to the league semifinals.

Levi Houapeu staked UMBC to a 1-0 lead over UNH in the 47th minute of last year’s game, but UNH tied it in the 70th minute and the game stayed even through 110 minutes.

UNH has scored only three goals in their previous seven America East outings.
