UMBC

—UMBC freshman forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) scored the game’s lone goal midway through the second half as UMBC (4-2-1) blanked visiting La Salle (1-4-2), 1-0 at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

Bulls capitalized on one of the few dangerous chances that either side was able to create. Sophomore midfielder Dustin Dzwonkowski (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) sent classmate B.J. Quigley (Essex, Md./Archbishop Curley) in with a ball down the left flank. Quigley drove in and sent the ball to the far post, where a sprinting Bulls tapped it in from four yards out in the 71^st minute of action.  

UMBC had a chance to add to the lead as La Salle was whistled for a foul inside the box in the 81^st minute. But Bulls’ shot to the left post was stopped by a diving Kyle Quigley. Quigley was credited with five saves in the game, as the visiting Explorers outshot UMBC, 8-7.

Retriever senior netminder Steve King (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) made a pair of saves to record his third shutout of the season and the 20^th of his career. King’s best save occurred in the 41^st minute as Ryan Richter’s shot changed directions and King dove and knocked it over the goal to preserve a scoreless tie. 

Richter led all players with four shots in the contest. Bulls recorded three for the home team. UMBC played without starters Kevin Gnatiko, Jovan Petrovic, Andrew Gills and Shondell Busby, who are all dealing with injuries.

The Retrievers are now 6-1-4 in that stretch in their last 11 home contests. UMBC also improved to 4-1 all-time vs. La Salle.

UMBC continues the three-game homestand on Tuesday, when they entertain Mount St. Mary’s.
