The UMBC men’s soccer team hosts the 12th annual adidas Kick Off Classic at UMBC Soccer Stadium this weekend. UMBC (1-1) split a pair of games in the season-opening Anders Classic at Navy this weekend…  UMBC tied a 2007 season high with four goals in a 4-2 triumph over Saint Mary’s (Ca.), but fell, 2-1 in double overtime to nemesis St. Francis (N.Y.)… The Terriers also frustrated UMBC in tournament play last year, drawing with the Retrievers (0-0, 2ot) at the 2007 adidas Kick Off Classic… Junior Andrew Gillis and freshman Andrew Bulls led the offensive explosion vs. the Gaels with a goal and two assists each… Bulls earned America East Rookie of the Week honors... Sophomore John Paul Waraksa  scored his first career goal to open the scoring and sophomore Levi Houapeu  also dented the net… Gillis matched his career total with the two-assist effort… Senior midfielder Dan Bulls got UMBC on the board first vs. St. Francis (N.Y.), scoring on a direct kick in the 16th minute, but the Terriers were the beneficiary of an own goal late in the first half and knotted the game at 1-1… UMBC lost steam in the final 57 minutes, managing just two shots and St. Francis got the game-winner 1:28 into the second extra session… Projected starters Kevin Gnatiko,  Shondell Busby  and B.J. Quigley  did not play vs. St. Mary’s due to injury, although Gnatiko made a brief appearance off the bench vs. the Terriers.

Lipscomb(1-1)opened with an impressive 4-0 win at Gardner-Webb, before dropping a 4-1 decision to Winthrop at the Soccer for a Cure Classic. Sophomore forward Miguel DaSilva scored three goals in the two games after posting a team-high 10 goals last season. The Bisons were 6-12-3 a year ago and have 22 freshmen on this year’s roster.

Navy (0-1-1)drew 0-0 with St. Francis (N.Y.)last weekend, before falling to St. Mary’s (Ca.), 4-2 in the Anders Classic in Annapolis. Midfielders Sam Lepley and Chris Marino scored the Mids’ goals vs. the Gaels. Goalkeeper Nolan Grebb recorded the shutout vs. the Terriers and made nine saves for the weekend. The Mids split a pair of games at last year’s adidas Kick Off Classic, edging Iona, 2-1, before dropping a 3-1 decision to St. Francis (N.Y.). The Mids posted a record of 7-8-2 in 2007.

Adelphi (0-2)met a pair of America East rivals this weekend at the UNH Nike Fall Classic. The Panthers lost a pair of one-goal decisions, falling 2-1 to the host Wildcats and dropping a 1-0 contest to Maine. Junior midfielder Alexander Kouznetsov tried to rally AU back from a 2-0 deficit with the Panthers’ first score of the season, but UNH held off the visitors for the 2-1 victory. Kouznetsov and junior defender Kevin Gluchowski were named to the All-Tournament team.
