Men's Soccer's Moffa, Bissohong Selected in Major Indoor Soccer League Amateur Draft

1/30/2008

Philippe Bisshong earned his degree in information systems in December.

UMBC men’s soccer players Bryan Moffa (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) and Philippe Bissohong (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) were selected in yesterday’s Major Indoor Soccer League amateur draft. Moffa was selected in the first round (fifth pick) by the hometown Baltimore Blast, while Bissohong was picked in the third round by the first-year New Jersey Ironmen.

Since 1990, 21 Retrievers have been selected or signed as free agents with the MISL or NPSL (National Professional Soccer League).  Moffa hopes to join current Blast members Billy Nelson, Giuliano Celenza, P.J. Wakefield and Matt Watson, all of whom were standouts for the Retrievers.

Moffa earned four letters for the Retrievers and has competed in 64 contests. After playing primarily as a fullback in his first three seasons, he has solidified the UMBC midfield in his senior season. As a freshman, he earned America East Conference All Rookie Team honors as he started the final 11 games of the season. He was named the team’s 2005 Unsung Hero. In 2006, he led the conference in assists with five in 14 games and he added five more assists to date in 2007 to give him 14 in his career. He served as the team’s captain in 2007 and earned Second Team All America East honors in his final campaign. Moffa expects to earn his degree in psychology this spring.

Bissohong joined the team in the spring of 2006, as he attempted to make the team as a walk-on. Obviously, he was successful and ended up competing in 15 of 17 games, earning nine starts. The native of Cameroon made such an impact that he was named the 2006 team’s Unsung Hero. With his work ethic at such a high rate, he was moved full-time into the Retriever backfield and started every game in the 2007 season as a central defender. He led all UMBC field players in minutes played and scored his first collegiate goal in the early season win vs. Temple. Bissohong earned his degree in information systems in December.
