Boston, Mass.—The UMBC men’s soccer team’s unbeaten streak was halted at four as the host Boston University Terriers edged the Retrievers, 2-1 at Nickerson Stadium.

UMBC fell to 8-5-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the America East Conference, as the Terriers edged a point ahead of the Retrievers in the league standings at 9-5-2, 3-1-2. Boston University is now unbeaten in its last six contests.

The Retrievers had posted four straight shutouts, but had their string of 383 scoreless minutes snapped in the 13th minute of play, as BU sent a ball into the box, which freshman Aaron O'Neal got a foot on and directed to Shaun Taylor who turned and fired a shot into the back of the net. Boston University had another good chance in the 29th minute, when O'Neal's shot to the lower right corner was saved by UMBC netminder Steve King (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley).

Coming out of the break up 1-0, Terrier forward Neil Hlavaty posted the game-winning goal nine minutes in to the final period when he scored just under the center of the crossbar on a direct kick. The Retrievers got on the board late in the game during a flurry of offense. Junior midfielder Kevin Gnatiko (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) headed in a direct kick off the foot of senior midfield Bryan Moffa (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) in the 86th minute.

It was Gnatiko’s third goal of the season and second in two games this week. The assist was also Moffa’s team-leading fifth of the season.

UMBC could not complete the comeback as the Terriers evened the all-time series with the Retrievers at 2-2-1. The Retrievers head back on the road to face Hartford on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Notes: King made four saves in the game for UMBC...Moffa, who led the America East in assists (five in 14 game) last season, now has 14 in his career.
