Baltimore, Md.—The Retriever men’s soccer team battled hard against local rival Loyola before 1,220 fans at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field, but UMBC dropped a 1-0 decision to the host Greyhounds. UMBC is now winless in its last four, falling to 3-3-2 overall, while Loyola improved to 7-2.

The game’s lone goal was scored in the 55th minutes as Loyola freshman Phil Bannister won a battle for the ball with UMBC junior netminder Steve King and floated a shot into the unguarded net from ten yards out.

UMBC was blanked for the third straight game as their scoring drought has been extended to 293 minutes.

The Retrievers outshot Loyola, 11-10 and had all six of the game’s corner kicks, but could not beat Greyhound goalkeeper Milos Kocic. King made five saves for the visitors, while Kocic had five for the hosts. Sophomore forward Andrew Gillis, junior back Dan Bulls and freshman midfielder Levi Houapeu each had two shots on goal for UMBC.

UMBC travels to Emmitsburg, Md. to take on Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday, before opening America East play vs. Stony Brook at UMBC Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
