Men's Soccer Battles James Madison to Scoreless Overtime Draw
9/22/2007
The Retrievers snapped a mini two-game losing streak and are now 3-2-2 on the season, while the Dukes are now winless in five straight and are 1-3-3.
The first seven minutes featured three corners by UMBC and two by James Madison and Retriever freshman John Paul Waraksa had a header go just wide on UMBC’s second corner in the seventh minute. The Dukes held a 6-4 edge in shots in the first half, but the Retrievers misfired on the best chance of the match in the 34th minute. Sophomore Andrew Gillis’ cross eluded JMU netminder Ken Manahan, but freshman striker B.J. Quigley hit a bounding ball over an unguarded goal from six yards out.
The pace actually slowed in the second half and neither team was particularly dangerous inside the 20 yard lines. UMBC would have the best chance in the first overtime, as junior midfielder Shondell Busby looked to be in on a break, but his hurried shot from 20 yards away was easily repelled by Manahan.
Early in the second extra session Quigley again had a chance, but did not pull the trigger from the top of the box and Manahan knocked away his dribble. JMU junior midfielder Nick Zimmerman, who led all players with eight shots, had a header off a corner go just wide in the 104th minute.
The fleet UMBC front line was whistled for nine offsides violations in the contest.
JMU outshot UMBC, 15-9, including 6-1 in the final two extra frames. The Dukes also had ten corners for the match, while the Retrievers countered with eight. UMBC netminder Steve King made two saves for UMBC, as did his counterpart Manahan.
The scoreless draw is UMBC’s second of the season, marking the first time in UMBC’s NCAA Division I history (1986) that they have recorded two such results in the regular season. The Retrievers are now 9-2-7 in their last 18 non-conference home games.
