Men's Soccer to Entertain James Madison on Saturday

The UMBC men’s soccer team hopes to snap a two-game slide as they host James Madison University on Saturday, Sept. 22 at UMBC Soccer Stadium. The opening whistle is set for 1:00 p.m. Following this game, the Retrievers have road contests at Loyola (Sept. 29) and Mount St. Mary’s (Oct. 2) before opening America East Conference play at home vs. Stony Brook on Saturday, Oct. 6.

The UMBC men’s soccer team dropped its second straight game, falling on the road, 3-0 to a tough Lehigh (4-1) squad at Ulrich Sports Complex on Wednesday evening...the Moutain Hawks reached the final 16 of the ‘06 NCAA Tournament... Lehigh scored three first half goals, marking the first time UMBC had allowed any scores in the first 45 minutes since the opener vs. Air Force... junior goalkeeper Steve King saw his consecutive minutes played streak end at 3,300 as sophomore Matt Henderson played 13 minutes in his debut... King entered teh week 16th in the nation in save percentage (88.5%, three goals allowed and 23 saves) and tied for 21st with a 0.574 goals against average... junior midfielder Kevin Gnatiko  picked up his third assist of the season vs. VCU and is tied for 22nd in the nation with three assists in five games... he now has ten career helpers and is UMBC’s active goal scoring leader with six... sophomore reserve forward Ime Umoh currently leads the Retrievers with two goals on the season... despite the loss to VCU, UMBC is still 9-2-6 in their last 17 non-conference home games dating back to 2002.

 

Duke Doings...

 

James Madison is winless in its last four games (0-2-2), scoring just two goals in that span... However, JMU has three one-goal losses and produced an impressive 4-1 win over perennial power UNC Greensboro on Sept. 2... Freshman forward C.J. Sapong is the lone multi-goal scorer for the Dukes with a pair of goals...JMU has outshot its combined opponents, 66-60... freshman netminder Ken Manahan has played every minute in the nets for the Dukes and has a solid 0.92 GAA.  

 

Series Notes

James Madison leads the overall series, 5-4, but these two teams have not met since a 2-1 JMU win in Harrisonburg, Va. in 1991... the Dukes have won three straight in the series... UMBC’s last win in the series occurred in Harrisonburg, a 1-0 triumph in 1987.
