Retriever Men's Soccer to Host National Power VCU at Soccer Stadium on Saturday

A very strong VCU Rams team invades UMBC Soccer Stadium for a Saturday 1:00 p.m. non-conference tilt with the Retrievers. UMBC is 3-0-1, but the competition will increase beginning with the contest vs. VCU. The Rams are 2-1-1, including an impressive 4-0 win over Albany and a tough 1-0 loss to 19th-ranked Clemson.

Sophomore Andrew Gillis scored the game’s lone goal in the 34th minute and the resurgent UMBC defense held in the second half as the Retrievers posted a 1-0 win over Iona (1-3) in the final game of the 2007 adidas Kick Off Classic… the Retrievers improved to 3-0-1 and are unbeaten through four games for the first time since the 1999… in that campaign, UMBC (19-1-2) did not lose until an NCAA Tournament game at Duke… after playing all 17 games and not posting a single shutout last season, junior netminder Steve King  now has three straight and the Retriever defense has not allowed a goal for the last 339 minutes of action…  he has played 3,134 consecutive minutes in the UMBC cage and his 123 saves are tenth in school history… King, defenders Chris Williams, Philippe Bissohong  and junior midfielder Shondell Busby were named to the All Tournament team… King also just earned co-Player of the Week honors from the America East Conference... the last 0-0 overtime tie that UMBC played was a game vs. Navy in October of 2005... UMBC is now ranked ninth in the Northeast region.

 

Ramblings

VCU is ranked fourth in the South Atlantic region and is tied for 32nd in the NSCAA/adidas national poll... senior forward Pat Viray leads a balanced attack with two goals (both scored in the 4-0 win over Albany)and seven points... Owusu Sekyere, Carlos Herdy, Jr. and Gerson Dos Santos have two goals apiece... netminder Andrew Dykstra has only needed to make 10 saves in the four games and VCU has only allowed four first half shots to date. 

 

Series Notes

VCU has won both previous meetings with UMBC, including a 2-1 triumph in Richmond, Va. in 2005... the teams met at UMBC in 1986 and VCU prevailed, 3-1.
